LIFE SCIENCES AND URBANIZATION

Aquaculture

Aquaculture may help meet the global demand for seafood, and arguably, ease pressure on wild stocks but it also raises many concerns: release of waste, potential spread of disease or unintentional escape of invasive species.

In the Mediterranean region, aquaculture producers, scientists and governments are working together to ensure high food production standards while respecting environmental considerations through practical decisions based on sound science. IUCN has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Federation of European Aquaculture Producers to identify ecological issues related to the development and management of fish farming in the Mediterranean as well as promote the best environmental management practices. The initiative is helping both the commercial operators achieve sustainable practices and supporting local communities in their efforts to conserve biodiversity. A series of practical guidelines has been published, dealing with the interaction between aquaculture and environment and with aquaculture site selection and management.
